Pen date 19/09/09 on North West coastal highway heading to Carnarvon.
We left Oakabella early morning on the day of Marilyn’s birthday (Gareth’s mum). Hope you had a super sweet B’day
We have now discovered that if it doesn’t rain water in Western OZ, it rains flies! So we both have flies in our eyes but we can’t see them because of the flies in our eyes (and we’re partial to a bit of peanut brittle).
Lots more lovely wild flowers on the way back to the highway. Stopped once on the way up to Hamelin pool at Overlander petrol station, Alice wanted to buy supplies but Gareth was being very fidgety and sullen and seemed very keen to get out of there so Alice couldn’t get him to agree to buying anything. It turned out that Gareth just badly needed a wee but forgot to use his words to inform Alice of this and the result was we headed off again with only a bag of crisps and thankfully, an empty bladder.
On the way up to Hamelin we saw a lot of very tired Kangaroos by the side of the road, Alice thinks this is an odd place for them to sleep but Gareth assures her they’re fine just having a little rest after all that hopping. Alice was a bit upset that we made our first roadkill but the swarm of little birds practically flew into the on coming car so there wasn’t a tweet we could do about it!
We turned off too early for the campsite we’d planned to stay at and ended up in Hamelin Homestead, a campsite that’d only been open for four months. It was being looked after by a kiwi called Jock and his wife Annie, This campsite had a lovely communal dining area and big kitchen and all the facilities were brand new so we ended up staying two nights. For those who are interested (Dad) the Hamelin Homestead is a massive farm of half a million acres and is home to 12,000 sheep which apparently is quite a lot for that type of land (desert basically).
From this campsite it was a mere 5km to the stromatalites, where we celebrated being close to these 3.5 billion year old life forms by having an ice-cream. It was starting to get hotter what can I say. So we went to a place called shark bay, that should have been called no-shark bay. Left a bit disappointed, but found a place called shell beach which should have been called ‘frickin no sand but all you can see is shells, bloody zillions of small white shells’ beach!
After a good stomp around the shelly beach, we got back to the campsite to find that the only other couple staying there was a big bloke from Hull and his wife. Gareth didn’t like the way the big bloke sat, and they just talked at us all night. They said we were a lovely couple, we thought they talked too much.
The next morning we headed to a place called Monkey Mia that is famous for its dolphins!?! It was a 5am start cause it was a bit of a trek and first feed was at 7:30, the dolphins come right up to the beach to get fed and they swim around your ankles, or knees in Alices case, when it came to the feeding they could only pick a few people from the crowd, and no matter how straight Gareth sat, and how urgently he looked around hoping to be picked, they seemed to look beyond his giant frame, and therefore he wasn’t picked. Gareth then insisted on leaving knowing that he had not paid the permit charge for the car park, he saved himself 16 dollars. Have that ya greedy dolphins !
We drove to a quaint little seaside town nearby called, Denham land went for a long walk in the bush after being warned by the tourist information guy that people die in the bush, but realized that there be nature Alice wanted to see in the bush, and it was worth dying for! ( don’t worry Frozzie we went on a bona fide bush walk trail to a place called little lagoon, being very careful).
On our arrival back in Denham we used the money we had saved from the Monkey Mia car park to treat ourselves to fish and chips and milk shake which were lovely!!
Went back to the campsite after a lovely day in Denham, the road into the campsite was just a farm track with no traffic so Gareth let Alice drive the car! She did really well apart from a momentary lapse in concentration when we saw some Kangaroos and nearly off roaded. We might up load the video onto facebook if we have time! but here are some pictures.
As well as our meal out we also had another Aus first – alcohol! We treated ourselves to some Emu beer and settled into the communal area where we had dinner and made friends with a swiss couple also staying at Hamelin. Tongues loosened by Emu beer we talked at them quite a lot and thought they were a lovely couple, they probably thought we talked too much!
Blog off.

This is the worse Blog I have ever read.
Also read the blogs in the wrong order and am now confused. Which one is Gareth again? The one with giant ears or the blonde one?

Hi Gareth, Mum here. Me and Dad have been chatting and we thought now was a good time to tell you we both don't love you and you are adopted and we would like it if you stayed in Australia.
No hard feelings I hope!
Love Mum
Well I think that they are excellent blogs. I feel very sad that Garth didn't get to feed a dolphin but v.happy that Ali did so they kind of balance each other out. Sounds like you're having an ace time apart from Gareth trying to fleece the Australians all the time - remember they're all ex-cons and they know all the tricks in the book!
Nice Catch 22 reference.
Request - can you put initials before the blogs so that I know who is writing? I never know who is writing apart from sometimes.
G - still don't really know what I'm doing on Civ but doesn't stop me from playing all the time.
This is a long comment! Remember it is fun to be careful!
